After 3 years I finally read the manual and quadrupled it's use! Jan 24, 2010
I bought this oven over 3 years ago (R-820B) model. Yes, its bigger than a microwave, and yes it has a bulk of metal in the back but it's an oven to cook in, not just a microwave to reheat in. I have it on the counter in a corner so it fits adequately. I'm energy conscious and try to keep my electric bill to a minimum so I don't like to use my conventional oven very much. For 3 years I've enjoyed roasting a chicken almost weekly in this, and also the usual microwave foods like baked potatoes, etc. (The microwave above the stove that came with the house when I bought it last year is now used for paperwork. Very handy!) The chicken is always moist and beautifully browned. During this past winter I felt like trying a burger in it because it was too cold to grill outside. I didn't have to read the manual because there are auto grill settings that require nothing more than hitting the buttons it tells you to. I was shocked at how beautifully grilled and sizzling it turned out. So I got the manual out and read the directions for all the other auto settings. Then I tried a steak.... then I tried some lamb chops (yum) that I bought on sale. WOW! Delicious! nice and pink in the middle, perfectly browned on the outside, and tender! Defrosting was a surprise when I stopped using the old microwave solution - a lowered power level (which almost always partially cooked the outside of the food). Well the "compu-defrost" setting was amazing - defrosted the meat without cooking it one bit, no matter how thin or thick the steaks were! I did check them periodically and took them out a little before the time was up. I like to bake bread so that's my next project. I'm so in love with this oven that if I were building a new house I would design a kitchen around it! Today I ordered a cookbook especially for this oven so I'm hoping that very soon my conventional oven will become a new filing cabinet! I live alone but often have guests for dinner so a regular oven is a waste of energy for me. I've never had a bit of trouble with it and have moved it through 2 states. I think the person who had the smoke problem probably hit the timer too many times so instead of 3 minutes it was going on 30 minutes. (I've done this myself). I absolutely recommend this oven - just be sure you know the measurements and have space for it's depth.
Sharp Grill 2 Convection Nov 18, 2009
Bought this to replace a standard microwave in my semi truck. So far i have mastered the standard frozen pizza and the self rising crust. Have done a few casseroles That turned out good. For an all around oven/Microwave this thing is what I needed.
A friend of mine has the same unit in his Semi also without any problems..
What a GREAT addition for the kitchen!!! Aug 09, 2009
This thing is worth every penny and it really isn't that expensive to start with. Does everything a microwave can do and also everything a convection oven can do as well. Both in a nice package. Mine worked fine right out of the box, no strange noises not one single problem. The only thing I would have liked is a way to turn off the turntable but Sharp missed that. You van take off the turntable and carefully position the rack around the heating element if you need to use a square dish that cannot rotate in the oven. But only do thin in a pinch.
I called Sharp to order the cook book that they listed in the manual. Now comes the bad part. Sharp wanted $30 for a cook book the advertised for $6.00, some inflation. Also they said that this unit was discontinued in 1999, boy was I upset when the guy told me that. I was ready to send it bact to Amazon.Who wants a 10 year old unit? I have never had a problem with Amazon so why should I start now I asked myself. I looked over the oven and it was made in May 2009 not 1999 like Sharp stated. I complained to the BBB about Sharp and the cook book as well as Amazon. I got a call from Sharp two days later saying they would sell the book for the advertised price. Book wasn't that good but seems like I hit a nerve somplace.Bottom line, if you are looking for a combo unit but this little know gem from Amazon. You will love it.
Great 3 in 1 Oven for RVers Jul 01, 2009
Why take up valuable counter space in an RV with a toaster oven or countertop convection oven when this unit will fit in the same space as a microwave and perform the functions of all three.
This unit requires no outside venting and is only 900 watts. It is the perfect choice for RVers looking to replace or upgrade from a standard microwave.
It easily fit into my existing microwave space and the Trim Kit I ordered separately looks great. My install required only the use of the trim and I did not need the aluminum liner.
This is the perfect size for 1-2 people, but cooks for more. Do not let the dimensions of the interior fool you. The turntable/ cooking pan is 12 inches in diameter.
It grills beautifully. It allows the user to select the grill setting for one or both sides of the item being cooked.
The convection oven turns out moist tender meats and terrific baked goods.
I really enjoy the micro/convec combination setting which enables the best of both worlds for speed and browning.
